consolidate power and bring in the military. what is the role of the military today? i do not know. are there other relatives who may want power? the majority of analysts are betting that this will be smooth but it will not happen overnight. there could be unexpected events that puts things in a different direction. >>darya: a south korean news agency announced that north korea conducted a short- range missile tests on the very day that his death was announced. south korean military officials cannot confirm the it report right now. they are meeting in an emergency capital-cabinet meeting and have put their home country on high alert. they are technically still in a state of war.

>>mark: we have seen a drop in markets overseas, especially in asia after the news of the north korean leader's death. take a look at the market reaction overseas. in the united states we are getting a little bit of a rebound with modest gains after we saw the dow up over 300 points last week. right now the dow is at 11,908. we are keeping an eye on bay area weather as we head into hanukkah and christmas. >>james: here is the view from the roof camera showing of some of that cloud cover that we see all over the bay this morning. that is is keeping us on a mild side effects of in terms of temperatures. off we are seeing freezing and subfreezing temperatures. cloudy and a mild but sunny. we do have a spare the air day in effect. a

haziness there. as for this afternoon, a '50s and low 60s. 58 in hayward and fremont. slightly warmer in san jose, los gatos and morgan hill. we're looking for a '50s-'60s throughout most of the valleys. we have a lot of communities through the san ramon valley with temperatures near 60 degrees. across the north bay, 60 degrees for nevada and napa. everyone just above or below that mark. 56 in downtown san francisco. we have a lot of activity in the pacific of most of it will say well to the north face a high pressure that is blocking us. we have a nice forecast for the week ahead. temperatures will be cold in the morning but the afternoon to look great. saturday and sunday, not that with even a slight warm up. let's find out about traffic with george.

>>george: a good ride around the bay area. we have not tracked in the hot spots yet this morning. we are looking at a pretty good ride into looking at improving conditions at the bay bridge. there was a backup to the middle of the east carbon lot but now it is just the center fastrak lanes that are slow from the middle to the end of the east bloc. very much improved for the westbound bay bridge. on the san mateo bridge, the volume is up but still a good ride as he had over towards foster city. tracking the commute on 101 for marin county, it is an easy trip south out into northbound traffic is very light as well. public transit is enjoying a good ride. no delays or problems to report. the 580 ride is a little slow coming in to look for more out of the altamont pass. it is still lighter than usual this

morning. >>mark: the self a third suspension span ended the news fan of the bay bridge is hitting another milestone. jackie sissel is a live with details. >>jackie: that morning. i am at treasure island looking back at the bay bridge. you can see that they are starting, but that did milestones is a major milestones. here is animation provided to us from caltrans. there are running back main cable, that will start this week. the police are moving the main cable over those catwalks and over the top of the tower itself ended then back around. it will do that several thousand times over the next couple months. will will see the work being done on the bay bridge. they are asking, if you are a computer to the bay bridge, it could be distracting, but keep your eyes forward. they

want to make sure that people are aware of that, they are right before you get to the s curves. the table is almost a mile long. that will make it the single along guests suspension cable of any bridge anywhere. it is 2.5 ft. wide. that will combine 17,000 of these steel wires that are 5 mm wide. it will weigh over 5,000 t when everything is said and done. by the time it is said and done, you could string of those 17,000 cables and it and and it would reach 60 percent of the circumference of the earth. it is a big stepping stone into opening the bridge which will happen sometime in 2013. when all

is said and done, a $6 billion tab. >>justine: we are learning that nissan is recalling nearly 34,000 sonata cars because of a battery cable problem that could cause the engine to stall. this problem affects 2010 and 2011 models that are equipped with this and march 20th ended. nissan says it will replace those battery cables free of charge. they are also recalling more than 28,000 crossover as tvs from the 2011 model year. that car has a problem with the turbocharger bracket that could also called the engine to stall. if you are advised to contact you dealer with any questions. >>darya: we're back with more in a couple of minutes. here is a live look outside from the roof on van ness ave. you can see the fog settling in. we will be right back. aho rob

>>mark: staff had to fog in the north bay. this afternoon we're looking for cloud cover and fog. a lot of sunshine although it will be cold as we head into the overnight hours. we could very well see frost in the valleys to the east end to the north. we expect temperatures to get back into the 30's tomorrow morning. mostly forties around the bay. fairfield inn and concord in the mid '30's, everyone else in jeweling 40 degree weather. it is a mild starts. the cloud cover is serving as a thermal plant is overnight. we are seeing fog across the north bay. it is not terribly widespread in most locations it is not that

we are keeping our eyes on bay area weather as we had through the week. james fletcher has more. >>james: here is the view from the golden gate bridge. this is what we're seeing for the week ahead. we have a valley frost possible for the next few mornings ferried we are expecting 40 degree weather down towards freezing over the course of tuesday- thursday. mild and the active in all week long. a lot of social and expected return to around 60 degrees. for the holidays, coolly and dry as we make our way through saturday and sunday. more on that in the 7 day around the bay. we have temperatures mainly in the '40's with a couple of exceptions, mountain view at 51. concord and fairfield in the mid-upper 30's. let's

" when it is all said and done, with all those wires and and it would be almost 18,000 mi. long. a huge amount of work is going to be done out here. we are over one year away from seeing the bridge opened. originally at the end of 2013 but they may be able is to push that up slightly. we're looking at a $6 billion tab for this

>>mark: in north korea, attention is shifting to their next leader, the son of the former leader who died on saturday at the age of 69. the north korean government says that he died of heart failure while carrying out official duties. north korea is urging its people to rally behind his son. he is said to be a political novice because of his age and lack of experience. last year he was reported to a four-star general, seen as a steppingstone for taking over for his father. he is already being called the great successor.

westbound commute direction. here is the golden gate bridge, as was conditions with light traffic southbound and an even wider ride northbound. a quick check on the traffic maps showed a rise in the east bay will start with alameda and contra costa counties getting a little bit slower for the trip to the san ramon valley but no major problems there. the all to my house looks good. in the south bay, smooth conditions, especially for interstate 280 and highway 85 all the way out to mountain view. the north bay ride is a little slow but the drive times are still under 35 minutes for your commute to the golden gate bridge. >>mark: another big step on the eastern span of the bay bridge. jackie sissel is live on a treasure island with details.

>>jackie: your work will look like a desert stringing this cable. it right hon the, the catwalk in the the guy i'm that will send the cable over the top of the tower in and around the suspension bridge itself. this is the biggest part of the radical several months. we're waiting to hear back from caltrans set along this will actually take. you can see the process that will be going on over and over again and can carry this is the cable that will hold up the entire bridge. it is a big deal. without this, obviously the project goes nowhere. let's take a look at some of the details of the cable. plus a mile long

>>mark: house republican leaders have rejected the latest payroll tax cut bill approved by the senate that would have had to percent more and every worker's paycheck. instead, they said they want to write their own versions. the house of representatives return to work today. they cast a two month extension for in january and february and and a left town. the senate bill would cut payroll tax benefits for about 1.8 million americans and avoid cuts in payments to doctors but it was only through february. the house is working on extension that will last all for next year. >>mark: in the meantime for

the top of the tower and back down the other side, wrapping it around the bridge itself. that will be done several thousand times over the next several weeks and months. yes, people will notice the works but caltrans is asking motorists to keep their eyes on the road. this is a big deal. this project will take a tremendous amount of effort and time but when they are done, the cable will be amazing. it is going to be the longest single cable holding of a bridge anywhere in the world. it will be almost a mile long. 2.5 ft. wide. 17,000 steel cables inside of that. it will weigh over 5,000 t. if you leave those wires and to and you're looking at almost 15,000 mi. worth of wires. it is a big deal. we have been waiting for the bay bridge to open. we are still over a year away from its
